Phytoplankton are photosynthesizing microscopic organisms that inhabit the upper sunlit layer of almost all oceans and bodies of fresh water. It serves as the base of the aquatic food web, providing an essential ecological function for all aquatic life. In all ecosystems, it often pays to go directly to the source for food, and that means that a lot of marine animals feed on phytoplankton. Some very small animals will feed on this stuff directly, eating it one cell at a time, but most of the animals collect it by feeding on quantities of it. These animals are often called suspension-feeders, as they feed on minute plankton “suspended” in the water, or simply filter-feeders as they filter food out of the water. Many filter-feeding invertebrates depend on phytoplankton as a significant source of nourishment. Within the saltwater reef tank, however, phytoplankton are generally not present in abundant numbers. As a result, advanced aquarists often dose this valuable living food source to boost the growth of their invertebrates. Clams (and other bivalves), soft corals, sponges, zooplankton and copepods are all known to feed directly on phytoplankton. Boosting the growth of beneficial zooplankton and copepods provides a secondary nutritional food source for your reef inhabitants. Typically, phytoplankton is dosed either directly or indirectly into a saltwater reef tank.

Microalgae cultures can easily be contaminated with toxic substances as well as other microalgae strains. They can also absorb heavy metals from the water where they are grown. For these reasons, it is important to buy microalgae products from a trusted source, especially those strains that are being consumed by humans. Directions
Before use, shake bottle vigorously, shut protein skimmer off and dose. Wait one (1) hour before re-starting the skimmer. For best results target feed your animals on as-needed bases or feed the entire tank three (3) times per week and follow the minimum recommended dosage as shown in the table below:

Storage

WARNING: DO NOT FREEZE!

Keep Refrigerated between 34-39 F (1-4°C). Shake the bottle every day to prevent plankton from accumulating on the bottom. Aggregates at the bottom will smother and die off.
