Chemical Grade Definitions

Grade FDM* Use Description
ACS Yes A chemical of highest purity that meets or exceeds purity standards set by American Chemical Society (ACS). A certificate of analysis (COA) can be requested from the the manufacturer.
GR Yes Guaranteed Reagent grade chemicals meet or exceed American Chemical Society (ACS) requirements and suitable for use in many laboratory and analytical applications.
USP Yes Chemicals that are manufactured under current Good Manufacturing Practices grade of sufficient purity and meet or exceed requirements of the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP); may be used for most laboratory purposes and analytical applications.
USP-NF Yes A grade of sufficient purity to meet or exceed requirements of the United States Pharmacopeia and National Formulary (USP-NF).
Lab No A chemical grade of relatively high quality with unknown levels of impurities. Suitable for histology methods and general laboratory applications.
Practical No Also called Purified. Grade indicates good quality chemicals meeting no official standard. Suitable for use in general applications. Practical grade organic chemicals may contain small amounts of isomers of intermediates
Technical No Good quality chemical grade used for commercial and industrial purposes.
